Week 7 : Analogical Thinking

Exercise 1
Familar Environment

Metal is my main focus for familar environment.

With metal , it keeps the structures strong and stable so it will not easily wear and tear. Furthermore , it is able to withstand harsh thunderstorm weather.

Fan is used to keep us cool during the humid weather. The cover that protects the blade of the fan has hole that allows the diffusion of air. Furthermore , the metal in the fan keeps the different parts of the fan in place .

Bicycle is a form of transportation. It is also eco friendly. With metal in it , the user on it is able to have a stable grip . Furthermore, it is strong so it is able withstand the user's weight so the user can comfortably ride on the bicycle without having to worry of any dangers.

Window shield provide safety to our family members. For example , toddlers like to crawl and climb onto chairs and other furnitures . With window shield it protect us from falling & also give us the grip. It is also make in a way where we can breathe .

Lamp post enables vehicles drivers to see clearly for other cars and dangers around when night comes. For example, looking out for passerbys or speeding cars . Thus , it prevents any accident from occurring .

Boards are used for advertising purposes and can also be used to help us when we are in need of help . For example , when we are travelling somewhere that we are unsure , we can always check the board as it would guide us to our destination.

Exercise 2

The metal used is corrugated metal.

It was bend and mold the ribbed metal into curvilinear forms. This opens one's imagination to new ideas you haven't  considered. This ceiling shows you how one material can bring about a new sense of design with metallic finishes.

Metals spoons used to support potted plants .

Metals used to make accessories such as the rings above.

Week 7 : Analogical Thinking

3 objects in class
This bun net used by ballerinas to keep their hair neat and away from their face when they are dancing. Becasue of its grids in the net, it reminds me of a fishing net used by fisherman.

This flexible ruler used in mathematics for drawing curve graphs, reminds me of a dancer. This is because it can bend into many shapes such as circle, rectangle, triangle and square.

This staples are use to staple work together so that it is neat and organise. The staples reminds me of a road tunnel due to its shape when it is place down.

3 objects from the internet

This is a hand fan. It is used to keep yourself cool during the humid weather. It reminds of a Pinnidale seashell because of its shape of  a fan out semicircle.

This is a picture of an caucasian lady with wavy hair. Her wavy hair reminded me of the crashing sea waves on the beach.

Image result for straightening iron
This is a straightening iron.It is used to straighten hair through using the heat from the hot iron. It reminds me of a stapler because of the way it function of how you hold both handle and press and then hold to straighten the hair.

Week 10 : Force Connection 2

The 5 objects are a calculator, spectacle case, a set of markers, wallet and a packet of ruled cards. Inside the spectacle case contain a spectacle, this allows me to see my items clearly. The calculator is for me to calculate numbers from addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. After I have gotten my desired answer, I then take one of the markers and write the questions on the ruled cards. Next, I will bring my written ruled cards and test it on the streets so as to see who is able to answer it. The person that get five of my ruled card correctly answered will win cash. The cash will be given from my wallet. This is the story that I have made up from using the 5 objects taken from this photograph.

Week 8 : Analogical Thinking 2

This shows emotion of fear. The sculpture shows the person is hanging and clunging himself tightly on the two branches so that he would not fall down. Furthermore, the person is gritting his teeth this shows that he is scared.

This sculpture shows emotions of anger. This can be seen from his expression made from his eyes such that it is bulging out and frowning fiercely directly towards you. Furthermore, his mouth is curved and is facing downwards with teeth showing . In addition, his body is leaning forward as his hand is placed at the back of his thigh ands legs bending.

The seated buddha shows emotions of calmness. This can be seen from his legs crossed and eyes half closed in meditation position. Furthermore, his palm is resting on his lap while the other is reaching towards the ground.

Week 9 : Forced Connection

Exercise

Pencil + Passionate
Pencil pens down what it believes is creative.

Pencil + Sad
Pencil gets sad when its idea is being erased and when its lead breaks.

Pencil + Brave
Pencil is brave enough to draw what it have in mind.

Pencil + Creative
Pencil can do many types of drawing such as portrait, landscape, still life, fantasy, figurative and illustrations.

Pencil + Greedy
It needs all attention and focus in order to draw something in detail.

Pencil + Hardworking
Pencil draws again and again each time it is erased so as to draw exactly what it wanted.

Week 6 : Lateral Thinking

1. Light Up
I will light the candle then the oil lamp and then the firewood.
Lighting the candle allows me to easily move from one place to another place if I feel the house is unsafe with wild animals living.
In addition, I can also defend them with my candle. When I have decided to settle down. I then light up the firewood to keep me warm. If there is not enough fire, I will search for plants that contain oil , kill animals for oil, rub two stones together or even search from broken machinery that would have oil nearby.

2. Wooden Box
I will put in my energy in the box. The more energy I put in, the lighter the box is. I can also put helium as it is the lowest density in air.

3. Which side of the cat has more hair
The top. This is because keeps the cat warmth. Unless the cat is pregnant with several kittens, the bottom of the cat would has more hair.

Week4 - Creative Mindmap on Cockroach

My group members decided to do the mindmap on cockroach. We first thought of separating the mindmap into four sections - history, types of cockroach, 15 facts and 101 ways to kill a cockroach.

The history of cockroach was rather tricky. This was because there were many informations online and some were just vague so we had to search in depth so as to know if our sources were true and accurate. One of our information was found here : http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Cockroach

( image used in mindmap )
For the types of cockroach , there were over 300 species of cockroach so we decided to pick up the main types of cockroaches. The cockroaches all came in a range of sizes and colours . I was rather awed by that as I thought cockroach were either black or brown. For more information, you can check out this link : http://www.orkin.com/cockroaches/ and http://www.pestworld.org/news-and-views/pest-articles/articles/cockroaches-101/

Below are some of the interesting cockroaches I had found online :

The 15 facts of cockroaches was the interesting part to do as there were many astonishing and bewildering facts that I had not known before. After this, I felt so much knowledgable of cockroach. Some of the facts could be found here : http://insects.about.com/od/roachesandmantids/a/10-Facts-About-Cockroaches.htm and http://www.pestworld.org/news-and-views/pest-articles/articles/fascinating-cockroach-facts/

The 101 ways of killing of cockroach sucked all our brain juices as we had to think of funny & creative ideas. I was inspired by ideas from here :
http://gizmodo.com/5029066/10-hilarious-ways-to-kill-summertime-pests-with-gadgets

To end this off , this project has made us to think out of  the box and exposed as to new ideas that may sound wacky yet innovative at the same time. If given another chance, I would definitely like to try a much more difficult and interesting topic. Lastly, these are my group members who have each contributed and worked hard together to come up with this mindmap.

Week 2 - 5 Examples of Breaking the Rules & Take A Journey

In the past , chairs are placed rooted on the ground. With breaking the rules method , designers have place chair above the ground such as inputting the use of playground fun by making the chairs as swings.

In the past , book shelfs used to be straight and standing on the ground. With breaking the rules method, designers have designed shelfs that can be pinned on the wall and also usw geometric shapes which is the triangles to create the scene of a figure running & falling down.

In the past , we need to have keys to enter the door. With breaking the rules method , we can now unlock the door using our mobile devices. Thus, it improves our lives efficiently as it avoids the hassle of digging our bag in order to find the keys.

In the past , we need a spoon to stir our hot drink. With breaking the rules method, just a press of a button on the handler of the mug, our drink is evenly stirred automatically. Thus, we need not worry if there is any residue left unstirred in the mug.

In the past , 3d objects are made from machines or by hands using a range of materials. This takes a lot of time and effort. With breaking the rules method , u can create 3d objects in just minutes with the touch of your hand using this 3d pen.

Take A Journey

The sun was streaming through a break in the clouds in great watery shafts of gold while the clouds are white marble on blue satin, dove gray underneath and brilliant white. The sun shone relentlessly on the tree as the shadow of the tree was cast on the road. Behind the tree, was a poster of Miranda Kerr, a Victoria secret model.

I was squinting my eyes because it was very sunny so I decided to stand in the shade. I  can feel the wind blowing and fresh air filled my lungs which made me felt refreshed and exhilarated. Furthermore, I could smell the freshly-cut grass.

Nearby , I could hear the sounds of machinery as the construction workers were cutting the trees. In addition, I could hear vehicles going by. It was rather noisy and a few of the passengers waiting for their bus to arrive were either covering their ears or busy on their mobile phones.

Week 1 - Summary of Tim Brown: Tales of creativity and play & A Picture a Day

Here is the video of Tim Brown : Tales of creativity and play

Introduction
As we got older, we feared the judgement of our peers which causes us to be conservative in our thinking. That is why many creative companies created wacky and playful environment so that employees feel relaxed and comfortable to share their ideas freely with everyone.

Exploration
Openness is the beginning of exploratory play. For example, if I had a plastic bag, my nephew would definitely play with it such as putting it on his head as a hat. However, adults tend to categorize new situation very quickly. Furthermore, the adult’s desire to be original was what limits them from exploring more possibilities in their ideas. Thus, that is why one should defer judgement and go for quantity.

Building
Construction play is both playful and a powerful way to learn. When it is carried out by designers, this behaviour is “thinking with your hands”- involves making multiple, low-resolution prototypes very quickly. For example, a designer uses architectural paper prototype to show what he wants the design of the building to be like.  Thus, by building prototypes we can test our ideas with our consumers in a much faster way than describing through words.

Role-Play
Designing service and interaction, one needs to imagine how the experience might felt and recognise the flaws in the design through acting. For children, they followed social scripts and learned the rules of social interaction while adults acted out the solutions which helps them prove whether it will succeed and for designers, they had to project themselves in the experience so as to understand what it felt like.  For example, if I wanted to feel how is it like to be a cancer patient, shaving all my hair allows me to feel the emotions they felt before. Thus, the idea of role-playing is both an empathy tool as well as a tool for prototyping experiences.

Conclusion
Play is not anarchy- rules of how to play and when to play. It is important to transition ourselves in and out of play through different experience using this generative mode - includes divergence and convergence.  Lastly, we need to have trust to play and trust to be creative.

A Picture a Day

One word - Dogs. Who doesn't love dogs? The soft cotton material kept my feet comfortable so every step I walk felt like I am a little higher from the ground.

Pizza Hut with friends. Cheese, ham, pineapple, all the goodness is in there so what's more can ypu ask for ?

On the way home, my bus always pass by here. And of course it looks nice if not I wouldn't take a photo.

A coffee a day keeps my mind awaked.
Though it kept me awake but if I am too tired, I could also fall asleep. It's too bad because life is not a wish granting factory.

Any human eyes can see that this is food and to elaborate more it is nonya curry. It's not just any other nonya curry it's an aromatic and savory nonya curry. Just one spoon of this curry, I felt like I had just tasted half of heaven.

This is call perks of waking up early so maybe 9am class is not too bad after all. Beautiful sky with vivid ombre shades of pink, purple, orange and yellow .

When I have Lady Luck on my hand, I find good food like this. It is located at orchard and the architecture is shape artistically as a cottage. Its large meatballs and large portion is definitely a good place that everyone should go.
